Group Disability Insurance

Disability insurance has become an increasingly valuable part of a comprehensive employee benefits package. Not only does disability insurance fill the gaps in financial protection offered by other programs like Social Security, it is also a highly sought-after component of a competitive benefits package for employers who need to attract and retain talented employees. And while employees appreciate the peace of mind they receive as their income replacement benefits are being paid, employers can use the resources offered by insurers to manage time and productivity losses and find the most effective ways to return employees to work.

Life Benefits for Employees

Though life insurance is an important asset for future financial security, many employees don’t realize its importance. Teaching employees about the value of life insurance may increase loyalty to the company as they better appreciate this benefit. Ask employees to envision the debt and financial responsibilities that loved ones would face in the event of their death. If the employee is the primary household income earner, how will the family support themselves? If the employee dies and leaves behind a mortgage or substantial medical bills, who will have the burden of paying that debt? Many employees do not realize the financial benefits of a life insurance policy until they think through these issues.

Logical Planning Solutions can help you make educated (and cost-saving!) benefit plan decisions. We can analyze and benchmark your claims data, model potential plan designs, estimate renewal costs and enhance employee decision-making – all designed to provide you with a cost-effective benefits plan tailored to your unique business and employee population.

Self-insurance

A growing number of U.S. employers are making the switch to self-insuring as a way to reduce costs and improve service. Self-insuring or self-funding is not right for every organization. Employers considering a switch from fully-funded to self-funded health plans should analyze the advantages and disadvantages before making the switch. Logical Planning Solutions can help you weigh the pros and cons of such plans, and help you decide if self-insurance is the right choice for your firm’s health care benefits.

In practical terms, self-insured employers pay for medical claims as they are incurred instead of paying a fixed premium to an insurance carrier, which is known as a fully-insured plan. Employers can be partially or fully self-insured. Employers that choose to partially self-fund, may decide, for example, to continue third-party coverage of mental health or prescription benefits, but self-fund all other medical claims.

Advantages of
self-insurance

1. Reduced insurance overhead costs.
2. Reduced state premium taxes.
3. Avoidance of state-mandated benefits
4. Employer control.
5. Employers can see improved cash flow since they do not have to pre-pay for coverage.
6. Choice of claim administrator. An insured policy can be administered only by the insurance carrier. A self-insured plan can be administered by the company, an insurance company or independent third-party administrator (TPA), which gives the employer greater choice and flexibility.

Dental

The rising cost of health coverage is now affecting dental benefits, according to industry experts. Troubled by high rates of inflation in their medical plans, some employers are scaling back on dental benefits. This is not necessarily the best move for employers, as workers tend to see the value in solid dental care. Dental benefits may seem like just another expense, but the risks of not providing dental benefits could be more costly – including significant medical expenses that could have been avoided and difficulty hiring premium talent due to a lacking benefits package.

Employees Want Flexibility

Now more than ever, employers are realizing that dental coverage is an essential, at times differentiating, employee benefit. But simply having dental coverage is not enough; employees are demanding more. Having a flexible, more comprehensive dental benefits package is becoming a competitive advantage for employers. Most of all, employees are asking for choice in choosing the best plan for them. This could include having the option to choose a base coverage level or pay more for more substantial coverage.

Vision Care and
Your Business

Vision care is not only essential to the health of your employees, it is also vital to your business. Employees at any age can experience vision-related health concerns that may impact your health plan budget and infringe on their productivity. Workers of all ages may experience vision stress, which can lead to consistent headaches, the inability to focus, blurred vision and a loss of concentration, according to the American Optometric Association. However, by offering vision insurance benefits to employees and encouraging them to take advantage of the benefit and maintain consistent care, they can reduce their risks of developing the conditions listed above.

Our Tools, Your Success

Vision
Routine eye exams can uncover serious health concerns, many of which are costly to manage and detrimental to one’s health. But many employees are reluctant to undergo routine vision checkups simply due to the cost. To encourage your employees to have regular eye exams, consider offering vision insurance as part of your benefits package.

Many times, optometrists can detect conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol before your employee or his or her primary care doctor is aware of any such concerns.

Diabetes: Causes diabetic retinopathy, which can lead to vision problems if it is left untreated. Optometrists can easily identify diabetes when examining the blood vessels of the eye and discovering bleeding in the back of the eye.

Hypertension: Optometrists can detect hypertension by looking at how the blood vessels of the eye cross one another. If certain patterns become evident, high blood pressure is likely the cause.

High Cholesterol: This condition causes plaque to get stuck in the forks of the blood vessels in the back of the eye.

Life

Legislative Briefs
Life insurance in many ways is a tool; it can be used in a way to protect loved ones as well as being a sound financial investment for individuals and business owners. The following benefits are examples of how to use life insurance as a tool.

• Income replacement - Buying life insurance protects your loved ones from income loss and financial catastrophe.

• Final cost - Burial costs, estate planning, debts, medical expenses and attorney fees all contribute to high costs at time of death. A life insurance policy can help to cover some or all of these costs at time of death.

• Income generation - Life insurance can be an inheritance to heirs, even if you have no assets at time of death.

• Building Cash Value - A life insurance policy can also act as a savings account in some instances, which can be withdrawn or borrowed at the policyholder’s request.

• Key Person replacement – If your company would lose a critical employee or owner in the event of an untimely death, a life insurance policy can help provide a benefit to counter act the financial hardship that could follow.
